Appointed Person (Lifting)

The Appointed Person sits at the top of the lifting hierarchy and is accountable for the safe planning of lifting operations. The Appointed Person plans the lift, assesses the load, crane and ground, designs the rigging and rigging study, categorises and controls risk, defines the team and their competence, and produces and signs the lift plan and method statement. The Appointed Person does not necessarily run the lift on the day — that is the Lifting Supervisor's job — but the whole operation flows from, and is authorised by, the Appointed Person's plan. This is the most detailed course in the lifting ladder. It covers the role and legal duties, building a competent team, the systematic planning process, load assessment, crane selection and load-chart analysis, ground bearing and stability, rigging design, specialised equipment, risk assessment, lift categorisation, planning critical, tandem and upending operations, proximity and environmental planning, the lift plan and method statement, permits and interfaces, emergency and contingency planning, managing change, competence and certification assurance, and handover to the Lifting Supervisor.
